Social
Networks Among Drug-Using Ethnic Minority Youth
Principal Investigator:
Juliet P. Lee, Ph.D.
This
ethnographic study is investigating the effects of the social
environment on the drug use of second-generation Southeast
Asian youth living in multi-ethnic urban areas. Through confidential
in-person interviews with Southeast Asians, aged 15-26, living
in two low-income multi-ethnic East Bay neighborhoods, the
research investigates: how Southeast Asian youth conceptualize
their ethnic, neighborhood and community identities; neighborhood
exposures to drugs, alcohol and tobacco, gangs, violence and
racism; their own experiences with drugs, alcohol, tobacco,
and gang involvement, as well as the use patterns and practices
within their social networks; their sense of identity and
relation to other ethnic groups, particularly in relation
to drug use norms; and their sense of the future for themselves
and their families. This one-year pilot study is funded by
the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
