HCV Transmission: Sex, Violence, Alcohol & Drug Use

Cognitive Lifetime Drinking History (CLDH)

Marcia Russell, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist, recently joined the Prevention Research Center in Berkeley, CA, after many years at the Research Institute on Addictions in Buffalo, NY. Trained as a chronic disease epidemiologist at Yale University, she has conducted longitudinal research on the fetal alcohol syndrome and on the relation of stress and alcohol consumption to alcohol problems, and high blood pressure in blacks and non-blacks. She served as principal investigator for the NIAAA Alcohol Research Center on the Clinical and Medical Epidemiology and directed the study of factors influencing natural recovery or entry into treatment for alcoholism described here. Her work includes the development of a screen for risk drinking and alcohol problems, the TWEAK, and the Cognitive Lifetime Drinking History, a computer-assisted assessment of lifetime drinking patterns. She is currently investigating the relation of drinking patterns to guidelines for moderate drinking and the role of alcohol and drug use in the transmission of Hepatitis C virus.
