Drinking, Cultural Norms and High Risk Sexual Behavior Among Young Adults

Ann Russ received her B.A. in English Literature from Hamilton College in 1988, and her Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Cornell University in 1999. Her doctoral research focused on AIDS hospice settings in the US and UK, and highlighted strategies of exchange and intimacy in the provision of care. She subsequently held a postdoctoral position at the Alcohol Research Group during which she focused on women's experiences of drug and alcohol treatment, and conceptions of motivation and family support both in substance treatment and in the alcohol and drug research literature. She has continued her work on end of life care, and how family members make decisions regarding the withdrawal of life support, including how "family" is mobilized and redefined in moments of crisis. Currently, she is working as a research anthropologist on the study "Drinking, Cultural Norms, and High Risk Sexual Behavior Among Young Adults" that will allow her to continue inquiry into areas of substance use and intimate negotiation, which have been central to her work and trajectory.
